Solving the question about solutions vs mixtures.


This week in our class we are discovering the differences between solutions and mixtures. Which are forms of Matter. These activities will help your child understand the definitions of solvents, solutes, homogenous and heterogenous and a few other terms associated with solutions and mixtures.
Go to the JUNKYARD on this site and have fun creating some junkyard science.


Well now that you have a basic understanding of solutions and mixtures let's go a bit further. Let's mix it up and go to this site to test your word knowledge. We have discussed water as a solvent and the properties of water. Use this site to refresh your understanding. Review Game Zone. Parent's need to help on this one.

How did you do? I know it's harder when you are at home, but push yourself. Now is the time to understand this concept so you can grow in knowledge. OK time to move to the next activity. We are now going to go to the Mixtures Lab and learn about how to separate mixtures. * Take your time and READ the instructions, it makes it more fun.

I thought that was kinda cool. Are you getting it? Remember mixtures retain their own properties and can be separated. Solutions do not. Now try this fun exercise. Science Materials.

For my scientists of the classroom.



Could this be you? You don't have to have the highest grades, or be the best in math, or even be a perfect student to become a scientist. In the classroom we are learning about the impact that scientists have had on our lives. What changes have been made through inventions, research, and medicine.

You already are a scientist. When you make Kool-Aid you are a chemist. When you study the direction the rain clouds are moving you are a meteorologist. When you find an interesting rock you are a geologist. Finally, when you watch for meteors or comets then you are an astrologist. It only takes curiosity, which we as humans have enough of.

On this page I want you to pick two famous scientists to tell your parents about. Then ask them to help you discover more about these scientists. Be ready to share a little in class.

Now to test your parents and yourself.Go to Funbrain and take the quiz over famous scientists and mathematicians. This is a challenge. I know you can do it. Good Luck.

Finally, think about becoming a scientist. You could research our universe. Find a cure for a disease. Discover what happens during a tornado. Research what makes a volcano erupt.

There are thousands of careers in the scientific field. It only takes a curiosity, desire, and knowing the method associated with scientific research. So to help you advance as scientists we will go over the scientific method. Watch Tim and Moby explain it. Then try the quiz and activity that follows the clip.

Space the final Frontier



Is it eight or is it nine? How many planets are there? What is each planet like? Have you ever wondered? It's time to explore space. It's not time to space out. About our Solar System.

Wanna lose weight, well don't go to Jupiter. Check out this site that will calculate your weight throughout the solar system. Weight in other Worlds.

Its time to think beyond our solar system and how can we, on Earth, study the outer reaches of our universe? It's time to visit the different parts of the universe. Use this site to find out more about DEEP SPACE.

Finally, use the Astronomy Dictionary to look up these uncommon objects of space that are often mentioned in you favorite Science Fiction movie.

Rockin with the Rock Cycle

We are going to travel throughout the rock cycle with a few games. Let's begin.


This site will offer a guided tour through the rock cycle with a special guide, Rocky. Click on Rocky to begin your learning adventure.


Here is another site that will challenge your Rock Cycle Trivia. I dare you, take the quiz. Challenge yourself and your student. Guess how many out of 10 will you get correct. Who won?


Now we are going to a virtual museum, Explore each rock classification and observe the different types of rocks in each category. Have you seen any of these rocks before? Walk outside and see if you can find any rocks that look similar to the ones in the photos. Happy hunting. Bring them to class and share them with us this week. Welcome to our classroom blog spot. This may be a new concept for you and your child. The purpose of this site is support your student in studying current science concepts associated with the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills), while having fun. This site will also inform you, the parent, about what we are currently learning in the classroom.
